Had the privilege of attending a GCF-OCF Alumni talk held recently…and boy, was I glad I was there! The speaker was Professor Dr. Thio Li- ann – a Christian law professor in NUS. Here’s what she said:
Her opening verse was taken from Matthew 22:14:
“Many are called, few are chosen”.
What does that mean?
Well, basically it means that ALL of us are called of God, but not many will withstand the trials/ persecution that comes with answering the call of God upon our lives.
Many times, we Christians ask the wrong question; ie we ask “O God, where/ what do You want me to do?” . For most of our lives, we spend it trying to remember what the assignment that God gave us was….rather than how to complete that assignment. What a waste of precious, precious time!
This was followed by exhortation to serve God in our generation, to be an agent of change….to be Christ’s ambassadors to the world….
- Matthew 5: 13- 16 – What and how to be the salt and light of the world ?
- Ephesians 6:10, 13, 14 – Here, we are called to ‘ STAND’ , just stand, not even to take/possess enemy ground…….
Then, she challenged us with this statement:
“ What does standing in the gap mean?”
Refer to Ezekiel 22: 30 – “ I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and STAND IN THE GAP on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it..”
Her concluding statement was that we as Christians need to stand up and make our voice heard in the market place – be it in the financial/ political/ etc area…..The final battle will be in the secular world – our marketplace. It is easy to preach, but it is not easy to serve God and be different in our workplace, where Christians are the minority. It is the faithfulness in small things, in our daily walk in life that counts for eternity. It will be difficult and tiring to go against the grain, but it is also necessary if we are to count the cost and carry our cross….
Love this quote:
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”. - Edmund Burke
Think about it……what are you willing to stand up for in your workplace?
